Ulster University has three campuses across Northern Ireland, each offering its own distinct atmosphere while delivering a connected student experience. International students begin their studies at the Belfast Campus and may progress to another campus to continue their degree.

Belfast Campus

Student Support
For international students, going to university in another country is a big step, new studies, new surroundings and new experiences. It’s exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. Ulster’s dedicated Student Wellbeing team support you every step of the way, helping you make the most of your student experience. The team offers friendly, expert advice on everything from academic support, managing your money and budgeting to disability services and wellbeing. All support services are free, confidential, and open to every student.

International students benefit from dedicated support services to help you settle in, adapt to university life and prepare for future career opportunities.

Students’ Union
Once you register to study with Ulster, you automatically become a member of the UUSU. UUSU is led by students, for students and offers a great support network. In addition to advice and guidance, membership creates opportunities to engage in student representation and take on leadership roles, enabling you to develop valuable skills and experience that enhance your CV.

With over 100 student-led societies, it’s easy to meet new people, explore your interests and build valuable skills outside your studies. From social events and live music to volunteering and student-led activities, there are plenty of ways to get involved and make the most of your university experience.

Ulster University School of International Education

Ulster University’s School of International Education is embedded within the Belfast campus, close to the city centre and with easy access to accommodation. From day one, you are fully part of the University community, with access to its spaces, facilities, and student life, alongside dedicated support for international students, including academic guidance, language support, and wellbeing services to help you settle in and succeed.

Study routes to Ulster University

You can choose from a range of entry routes designed to prepare you for your studies at Ulster University. Each programme combines academic learning with expert English language support, helping you build the skills and confidence you need to succeed at the right level for you.

International Foundation Year (IFY) / International Year Zero (IYZ): Represents the first year of a four-year undergraduate degree, designed specifically for international students who need additional academic preparation and English language support. It typically consists of a one-year foundation programme followed by a three-year undergraduate degree.
International Foundation Year – Students require separate visas for their pathway and then their degree study.
International Year Zero – Students require one visa for the duration of their study.

International Year One (IY1): An integrated first-year equivalent route for students with a stronger academic and English language qualifications, leading directly into Year 2 of a degree and typically completed as 1 year of study plus 2-year undergraduate degree (standard UK 3-year degree).
