International Year One in Engineering

The International Year One (IY1) is the first stage of a three-year integrated degree and is studied over three terms before progressing to the university. It is ideal for international students who do not meet the University’s direct entry requirements. International Year One provides an intensive combination of first-year university subject modules with extra study and English language skills. Upon successful completion, you will continue to the second year of your chosen degree.

Course Overview
In this course, you will be provided with a highly supportive and academically challenging environment in which to develop language, university study, and subject-specific modules related to your intended degree choices in the field of Engineering.
The International Year 1 (IY1), delivered at the University of Bradford International College (UBIC), provides an intensive combination of first-year university subject modules with extra study and English language skills.
The IY1 is the equivalent of your first year of study at undergraduate level. Upon successful completion, you will continue to the second year of your chosen degree at the University of Bradford.
To join this course, you will need to have successfully completed high school or equivalent and meet the English language requirements. We offer Pre-sessional English, which is a 6 or 12-week extension course for those who may not yet meet the required English language standards for direct entry to our pathways

Course modules
This module will consolidate and develop your academic English and enable you to demonstrate that you have the language and skills required (IELTS Band 6.0 or above) to progress on to the second year (level 5) of your undergraduate degree course. The module will also help you to understand what is expected of students at university in the UK and it will equip you with the academic study skills needed to successfully engage with and complete your studies at undergraduate level. This module will provide you with a sound understanding and command of the key mathematical tools and techniques used to solve engineering problems. The module covers the well-recognised elements of classical engineering mathematics which universally underpin the formation of the professional engineer. The principal aim of this module is to bring students up to a common standard in mathematics in order to facilitate their entry into second year engineering studies. The aim of this module is to provide students with a clear understanding of the concepts of Mechanical Engineering. This is to be achieved through ensuring that the student gains an appropriate background in the principles of Mechanical Sciences and their uses in the solutions of a range of engineering problems. The course teaches the key elements of the design process and shows how design is an integrative subject that encompasses all disciplines of engineering. In research, designing and realisation students from various engineering disciplines are introduced to industry standard software tools that are specific to the design needs and requirements of their own discipline. The student will experience collaborative and individual design from problem formulation through to manufacture of a product. The module will show how any modern engineer has to tackle a range of issues and produce cost-effective solutions while keeping a weather-eye on product lifecycle with a view to maintaining sustainability and avoiding irreversible environmental damage. The module enables students to develop an understanding of basic electrical and electronic circuits, mechanical power transmission and the laws which govern their behaviours. It also provides the student with a clear and thorough understanding of the theory and applications of engineering mechanics for dynamical systems.
