International Year One in Computing
at University of Bradford
The International Year One (IY1) is the first stage of a three-year integrated degree and is studied over three terms before progressing to the university. It is ideal for international students who do not meet the University’s direct entry requirements. International Year One provides an intensive combination of first-year university subject modules with extra study and English language skills. Upon successful completion, you will continue to the second year of your chosen degree.

Course Overview
This course aims to strengthen your understanding of Computer Science and develop practical computing skills through practical and case studies. This course also equips students with a range of fundamental skills required for successful advancement in the creative industries.
The International Year 1 (IY1), delivered at the University of Bradford International College (UBIC), provides an intensive combination of first-year university subject modules with extra study and English language skills.
The IY1 is the equivalent of your first year of study at undergraduate level. Upon successful completion, you will continue to the second year of your chosen degree at the University of Bradford.
To join this course, you will need to have successfully completed high school or equivalent and meet the English language requirements. We offer Pre-sessional English, which is a 6 or 12-week extension course for those who may not yet meet the required English language standards for direct entry to our pathways.

Course modules
This module will consolidate and develop your academic English and enable you to demonstrate that you have the language and skills required (IELTS Band 6.0 or above) to progress on to the second year (level 5) of your undergraduate degree course. The module will also help you to understand what is expected of students at university in the UK and it will equip you with the academic study skills needed to successfully engage with and complete your studies at undergraduate level. This module will provide you with a solid a grounding in computational thinking and the use of the mathematical structures that underpin programming and data structures.nThe principal aim of this module is to bring students up to a common standard in mathematics in order to facilitate their entry into second year computational studies (20Credits) Module Code: BIC4018-B
Provides students with a theoretical and practical introduction to Software Engineering. Enables students to learn about the methodologies and approaches adopted in software development.nPlaces software development in the context of client requirements and demonstrates how these might be met. Places such development in a wider context by introducing issues around commercial viability, sustainability, legal frameworks, ethical and safety considerations. (20Credits) Module Code: BIC4012-B
Introduces those students to the concept of programming. Enables students to become familiar with and use a programming language, Java, inconstructing simple programmes. Allows students to deploy such programmes in solving practical problems. Introduces students to the notion of coding and the adaptation of programmes to the particular requirements of organisations or businesses. Introduces students to the language and related skills which allow a computing professional to develop and maintain appropriate, robust and secure information systems in the workplace. This module provides students with a broad introduction to, and overview of, the discipline of computing. It then focuses study on the structure and components of a computer system and the key components and responsibilities of an operating system. By providing students with an understanding of how their computer and its operating systems work it will provide them with a good grounding for the further years of their degree studies. The module introduces students to structures, key concepts and standards of the World Wide Web. It provides practical experience and theoretical understanding of the tools, techniques and technologies which are deployed to develop the content, presentation and interactive features of basic websites and web applications. Students learn how to build, test and de-bug web pages using a web browser, and ensure that these conform to recognised industry-wide standards. The module will also develop students’ research skills by encouraging them to explore the theoretical concepts in the real-life context of firms and organisations which depend on well-designed and managed internet technologies.
